Green Herring Definition

Ok, you got me. This doesn’t exist as a term…yet. But I am pretty sure you know what I mean when I say green herring.

The definition of a red herring is that the subject can be misleading - I have taken this and shaped it to be a green herring. So simply, if it is regarding a company or product or idea that seems good for the environment but is in fact misleading us and there is a sneaky background or side to it, it is a ‘Green Herring’.

An example is compostable - there is the belief that because it is compostable it is better. But certain items can only be composted in industrial composts. They don’t break down in home composts. They also don’t break down in our bins,a dn it doesn’t mean you can throw it on the ground and it wil breakdown in a few days. Therefore it is misleading and so a classic green herring.

Hopefully that makes sense for you!
